How to Choose the Right Tile Adhesive for Your Project?

Tile size, where the tile goes and what it sits on decide the adhesive. Get those three right and the tile stays put for years. Get one wrong and you pay for it twice.

Why tile adhesive, not cement mortar

Cement mortar used to be the default for fixing tiles. Today’s tiles are bigger, heavier and far less porous, so mortar struggles to grip them. A polymer-modified tile adhesive bonds where mortar cannot.

  • A thin bed of about 3 mm instead of a thick mortar layer
  • Grips low-porosity vitrified, porcelain and natural stone tiles
  • Open time to level and adjust each tile
  • Tested to IS 15477:2019

Start with the tile size

The bigger and heavier the tile, the more the adhesive has to hold, and for longer. Size is the first filter.

Small tiles up to 2×2 ft

For regular residential floors and walls, NSA 20-20 gives a dependable bond with anti-vertical-slip and Champion’s Special Gel Technology.

Medium and large-format tiles

Once tiles pass 2×2 ft, look for extended open time (E) and, for the largest formats, flexibility (S1 or S2).

Up to 2.5×5 ft and marble framing

NSA T-20 Plus uses an Advanced Silica Base for larger vitrified tiles and marble-granite framing.

Large and very large formats

NSA W-20 (S1) handles large-format tiles, marble, granite and elevations. NSA W-20 Plus (S2) is for very large-format tiles, Italian stone and ceiling work.

Check where the tile goes

Floors carry foot traffic. Walls fight gravity. Exterior elevations face sun, rain and temperature swings. Each location asks something different of the bond.

  1. Interior floors: bond strength and full coverage under the tile.
  2. Interior walls: anti-vertical-slip so tiles do not sag before the adhesive sets.
  3. Exterior elevations: water resistance and S1 flexibility for heat and movement.
  4. Ceilings and heavy stone: instant grip and S2 flexibility.
What S1 and S2 mean

S1 and S2 are deformability classes. S1 adhesives are deformable; S2 adhesives are highly deformable and cope with more movement between tile and substrate.

Standards reference

Grades follow IS 15477:2019: C2 = improved cementitious, T = reduced slip, E = extended open time.

Look at the surface underneath

Fixing new tiles over old ones saves demolition time, but only with an adhesive made for it. NSA T-20 is developed for tile-on-tile work.

“Clean the old surface, remove loose or hollow tiles and make sure the base is sound. The adhesive can only hold what is holding.”

How to apply tile adhesive

  1. Clean the surface of dust, oil and loose material.
  2. Mix the adhesive with clean water to a smooth, lump-free paste.
  3. Spread with a 6×6 mm square-notch trowel to about 3 mm thickness.
  4. Press each tile firmly into place and level it within the open time.
  5. Leave even joints for grouting with Champion Tile Grout or Epoxy Grout.

Key takeaways

  • Choose by tile size first, then by location, then by surface.
  • Use E (extended open time) grades for anything above 2×2 ft.
  • Use S1 or S2 grades for elevations, stone and ceilings.
  • Ask our technical team for a site visit when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tile adhesive over old tiles?

Yes, with a grade made for it. NSA T-20 is developed for tile-on-tile work. Remove loose or hollow tiles and clean the surface first.

How much tile adhesive do I need?

About 2–3 sq. ft. per kg at 3 mm with a 6×6 mm notch trowel, so a 20 kg bag covers roughly 40–60 sq. ft.

Which adhesive is right for marble and granite?

NSA T-20 Plus for framing and large vitrified tiles, NSA W-20 for large stone and elevations, NSA W-20 Plus for Italian stone and ceilings.

What do C2, T, E, S1 and S2 mean?

C2 is an improved cementitious adhesive. T means reduced slip, E means extended open time, and S1 / S2 are deformability classes.
